I am Lyric Carothers, also known as Lalay, from Panabo City, Davao del Norte. My involvement with CSO began when I started attending social events and eventually became a member. My commitment grew even more after assisting a member with transportation to a meeting, which later led to my election as secretary. As time passed, I continued to support and participate in the organization, but work and family obligations eventually required me to step down. Nevertheless, I remain committed to supporting CSO through donations and by helping attract new members and promote the Paper & Pencil Project. Thank you!
Maricel Beaman was born in Davao City, the largest city in Mindanao. She was drawn to CSO by its kind-hearted members, always willing to help, and impressed by the unity among members, connected by their shared Cebuano dialect despite coming from various Philippine islands. Over 30 years, Maricel has been a passionate supporter, serving as Treasurer, Secretary, Vice President, and President. Her unwavering dedication has been key to CSO's growth, fostering a strong sense of community and ensuring its success.
My name is Aireen Squires, and I have been a member of CSO since 2019, introduced to the organization by a friend. When I attended my first CSO quarterly meeting, I immediately developed a deep appreciation for the organization. I was particularly impressed by CSO’s transparency; every detail, even just a few cents of bank interest, is clearly presented in the financial reports. In that moment, I knew this was an organization I wanted to be a part of. I believe it is truly worth my time and energy, and I am committed to contributing in any way I can to support the organization’s continued growth and future success. I also want to acknowledge the fellow officers and active members who are wonderful to work with—both professionally and personally. Their dedication, teamwork, and family-like camaraderie create an inspiring environment. Together, we share a strong passion for achieving our common goal: continuing CSO’s mission of providing school supplies to underprivileged public elementary students in the Philippines. Throughout my time with CSO, I continue to gain valuable knowledge and meaningful friendships. I am grateful for the opportunity to contribute the skills and experience I have, even in small ways, to support the organization and its advocacy.
I am Ruth Laurente Olandria, co-founder of the Cebuano Speaking Organization (CSO) with my husband, Wilfredo L. Olandria. A retired registered nurse from Portland, Oregon, I am proud of CSO’s growth and impact since its founding in 1988. The Paper and Pencil Project has been especially meaningful, sponsoring supplies for first graders in 42 public schools as of 2024. The enthusiasm and fresh ideas of younger members ensure CSO’s continued success. Your dedication is truly appreciated. Ruth Olandria CSO President (2023–2024) Board Member (2025–2028)
Marylyn Tollisen serves on the CSO board and manages the organization's websites, PaperPencilProject.org and CebuanoSpeaking.org. An active member since 2012, she supports the Paper & Pencil Project, providing school supplies to remote Philippine schools, and works with her husband, David, on donation coordination and outreach. Marylyn, David, and their children have participated in CSO events since 1993. Over the years, Marylyn has served as President, Vice-President, Secretary, and in whatever capacity CSO needs her.
I’m Lucy Brown, from Madridejos, Cebu, Bantayan Island. Introduced to CSO by Nora James, I joined after attending events and embracing its mission to help Filipino children through the Paper and Pencil Project. The initiative supported two schools in my hometown (2009–2010 and 2017–2018) and awarded a scholarship to my alma mater’s valedictorian, now a CPA. When Typhoon Haiyan hit in 2013, CSO aided my community. I chair the Paper and Pencil Project and serve as a board member through 2026. Proud to be part of CSO, I encourage continued support for its projects—together, we’re one family.
As the incoming Board Chairman for 2026–2028, it is truly an honor to serve the Cebuano Speaking Organization of Oregon & Southwest Washington. I first joined CSO in the early 1990s, and over the years I have served as President, Vice President, Board Member, and even stepped in mid-term to fill a vacated role from Secretary to PRO. There was a time when CSO nearly fell apart, yet through teamwork and dedication, the organization survived—and came back stronger. Today, CSO continues to grow with renewed hope, purpose, and success in its mission, especially through the Paper & Pencil Project, which supports the basic academic needs of young children starting their education in the Philippines. I am proud of both our long-time members and the new faces joining us. In CSO, there is no “I,” only “We.” Together, we continue to build, develop, and uphold the spirit of Filipino Bayanihan here in this part of America. As the saying goes, “We create our tomorrows by what we learn today.” As a retired BSN, RN, I am grateful to channel my compassion and energy into CSO’s shared mission, where hearts and minds work together to uplift others. When I’m not serving the organization, I enjoy quiet moments with my husky, Navajo; reading adventure books over a good cup of coffee; streaming movies; attending reunions that take me to new places; and always trying to be an aspiring chef in my humble kitchen.

Divine Gray was introduced to CSO by her close friend, Lucy Dorson Brown, in 2013. Since then, she has actively participated in CSO events and meetings whenever her work schedule permits. With her passion for capturing people’s smiles through photography, she has taken on the role of CSO’s official photographer and videographer, performing exceptionally in this capacity. Divine became a CSO board member in 2023 and is honored to continue serving in this role until her term concludes in 2026.
I feel blessed to have found CSO and am grateful to Marylyn Tollisen for inviting me to an event in late 2019. Since then, I've become an active member, serving as Treasurer, Secretary, and most recently, Assistant Secretary. CSO is more than just an organization to me—it's a family united in supporting underprivileged elementary school students in the Philippines through the 'Paper and Pencil Project.' Seeing the joy on the students' faces when they receive school supplies is truly fulfilling. Let’s continue working towards our goals. God bless CSO.
